Van Gogh: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies

Director: Giovanni Piscaglia

Narrator: Valeria Bruni Tedeschi

Language: English, Italian and French, with Traditional Chinese and English subtitles

Year: 2018

Duration: 83 mins

Discover Van Gogh in a whole new light, through the legacy of Helene Kröller-Müller, the largest private collector of the Dutch painter’s artworks, who acquired nearly 300 of Van Gogh’s works in the early 20th century. Van Gogh: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies narrates the turbulent and introspective journey of the painter, seen through passages in the letters of his brother Theo, and images of the places where Van Gogh lived, spanning from Paris to Provence.

Through the Kröller-Müller collection, this movie will not only unravel the essence of Van Gogh’s artistry and exceptional talent, but also provides insight into the significance of drawing as an integral part of his artistic process. Van Gogh’s seemingly instinctive, au premier coup canvases were a result of long, preparatory studies, not sketches but complete works of art in themselves, where the broken flow of lines that characterises the style of his paintings, can already be found.

This deeply immersive art film allows us to discover what gave Monet the inspiration to return to work, and to produce such a stunning and immortal work of beauty. Follow the River Seine on a visually stunning journey from Le Havre to Giverny and Paris in France, through influential moments in the life of the world’s most influential painter, with astonishing up-close access to some of his greatest masterpieces.
